How to Register Your Address (Anmeldung)
What is Anmeldung and why it’s mandatory
Anmeldung is the process of registering your address with local authorities. Every resident in Germany must complete this within 14 days of moving to a new home. Without Anmeldung, you cannot open a bank account, get health insurance, or sign most contracts.
Required documents
- Valid passport or national ID card
- Completed registration form (available at Bürgeramt or online)
- Landlord confirmation form (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) signed by your landlord
- If applicable: marriage certificate or birth certificates for family members
Step-by-step process
1. Prepare your documents
Get the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord before moving in. This form proves you’re allowed to live at the address.
2. Find your local Bürgeramt
Each district has its own registration office. Search “Bürgeramt + your city name” to find locations. In major cities like Berlin or Cologne, you can use any office in your district.
3. Book an appointment
Most offices require appointments. Book online using terms like “Anmeldung einer Wohnung”. Popular cities book 2-3 weeks in advance.
4. Attend your appointment
Bring all original documents plus copies. The clerk will verify your information and give you a registration confirmation (Anmeldebestätigung).
Common problems and solutions
- No available appointments: Check early mornings or try neighboring districts
- Missing landlord form: Some hotels provide temporary registration
- Language barriers: Bring a German-speaking friend or use simple phrases
After registration
You’ll receive your tax ID (Steueridentifikationsnummer) by mail within 2-3 weeks. Keep your Anmeldebestätigung safe – you’ll need it for many official processes.ency—everything new families at CIS need to get started.
