Health, Inclusion & Wellbeing

Ensuring every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to thrive through dedicated mentoring, child protection, and personalized learning support.

Creating a community where every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

At Cologne International School, one of our core missions is “to explore and fulfil the potential within ourselves.” To make this a reality for every student, our Inclusion Team works to identify and remove barriers to learning, ensuring that every child can grow in an environment that values diversity, wellbeing, and personal growth. In the MYP and DP, each student is paired with a mentor and supported through the MARIO Education Platform, which helps us track and enhance individual wellbeing and learning progress.
Inclusion
Embracing Learning Diversity

Inclusion at our school means embracing learning diversity and finding the right support and accommodation to ensure that each student feels supported and valued within our academic community. We are committed to understanding individual needs and areas for development so that every student can grow, achieve, and experience success.

In line with IB standards and practices, we strive to:

  • Remove barriers to learning and enable every student to develop, pursue, and achieve challenging personal learning goals
  • Recognise learner variability when planning students’ personal learning goal

The term “learner variability” reflects our understanding that not all students learn in the same way and that not all students have the same learning goals. With the support of the Inclusion Team, we aim to support all students with their learning and recognise their unique learning skills and successes.

1
Health & Wellbeing
Balancing Body, Mind, and Growth

Health and wellbeing are central to our strategic vision.

We believe that our students should have the right to explore and fulfill the potential within themselves and to connect with each other.

We encourage students to understand the balance of healthy choices for nutrition, exercise and mental health to sustain their personal wellbeing.

To achieve this, we encourage all our students to focus on their Approaches to Learning, to foster and develop the self-management, social, communication, research and thinking skills required at school and in their later lives. This requires the help and support of parents, teachers, support staff and the school leadership working together in partnership.

2
Child Protection
Safe and Supportive Environment

Child Protection is a fundamental priority as part of our safeguarding process. All staff receive annual training and share concerns and support with the Child Protection Officer, who works closely with the school leadership to ensure student safety and wellbeing.
Our purpose-built school facilities are designed with safety in mind — featuring multiple breakout rooms, a dedicated library space, and calm areas for students who prefer quieter settings for study or social interaction.

Amazon Jungle

Throughout February, 2024, 25 of our CIS students embarked on a long journey to the Amazon Jungle in Iquitos, Peru. Students worked hard the previous months to raise funds to be able to create their community service project with the local communities of El Chino in the Tahuayo Region of the Amazon basin. Once there, our 25 students, along with our three teachers and the guides at the lodge they stayed in, participated in a whole day community service project where students built two complete Primary School classrooms. Our students built 20 desks and 20 chairs from scratch with the help of the local community and finished the day by putting the new furniture inside the classrooms. Thanks to this initiative, the students were able to fill up two classrooms that are now providing full day education to the children of the community. At CIS, one of our pillars of excellent education is understanding the privilege that comes with being an IB student and an international school student, and the importance of being global citizens. With this, comes the responsibility of being stewards of the communities that inhabit this world and the importance of giving back and being change makers!
